Girls Rule

June is the month of fundraisers! As someone who works for a non-profit, I love that I can be a part of such worthy causes as these.

I have to say this about the House of Yes: his has to be the most fascinating space in NYC I have been in recently. I studied urban planning in graduate school, so I’m really into adaptive reuse and new models for work/living spaces. If I had my way, I’d be a private developer specifically creating projects that incorporated creative uses, and I’d get every person involved in the House of Yes on my team. They managed to transform this raw space into a place where people can perform and create. Who else can hold a circus in their HOUSE? I know I can’t.

I’d say this event is worthwhile just to check out the House of Yes. Even if you don’t like charities. Or girls. Or me :)

Sa-Ra Creative Partners

In late 2004 or so (possibly earlier as I don’t have the best memory) the “streets” were absolutely abuzz about Sa-Ra Creative Partners. That demo cd of tracks was getting passed around more than notes in homeroom and everyone was loving it. Just gritty futuristic soul funk. The kind of shit you’d bump riding around in one of those space ships on The Jetsons that you tricked out with an all-white interior and turbo jet propulsion. Good stuff.

The hype was like a slow tide that turned tsunami status fast. I remember being in LA around the time Rosebuds came out on vinyl (all in pink!) and I bought myself 2 copies and bought several other copies to take back to NY with me because folks were that hungry. I recall that show they did at Canal Room sometime in ‘05. I even have the free Sa-Ra t-shirt from that night somewhere in the crib. Folks left that show wanting more. The stage was set and we were ready and waiting.

So what happened? Who knows? I’m not a journalist! These guys apparently didn’t believe too much in carpe diem and we didn’t get an official full-length album until 2-3 years later. They have as much talent as ego so I’m sure a lot of it had to do with label woes (they were signed w/ Ubiquity as well as G.O.O.D which I believe sparked off some lawsuit drama) Then there was talk that they had split. I don’t even know if they are together right now.

Now, there is a new album being released on June 23rd called Nuclear Evolution: The Age of Love. It will be released on Ubiquity. I had a chance to listen to a very poor and watermarked advance and this definitely sounds like demo-era Sa-Ra, meaning most of this stuff probably isn’t new and this album may be something to satisfy whatever contract they had with the label. However, it bangs all the same which is just a testament to their talent and the quality of music. Granted 4 years isn’t a huge amount of time but in this day and age when today’s music lasts about as long as it takes for it to no longer be a ‘cool’ ringtone this is a good thing . I do hope this means that there will be another resurgence of the crew and we’ll hear some new stuff soon.

Here’s one track off the album. This is actually my favorite one so far. Guitar driven basslines make me happy.

I am beyond honored to be a part of yet another quality event brought to you by Ladies Love NYC.

Ladies Love the Breaks is a fundraiser for Autism Awareness. At this point, I don’ t think I know one person who isn’t impacted by Autism in some way, shape or form. It affects 1 in every 150 persons born-this is more than pediatric diabetes, cancer, and AIDS combined. Autism impairs a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe.

The amazingly strong and beautiful women of Ladies Love NYC is on a mission to raise money to increase awareness so that it will lead to a cure. This is a night chock full of the most talented people in New York City: Visual Artists, B-Girls, DJs, Musicians, MCs, Singers, and more, who are getting together to try and raise awareness and raise money!

A Love Bizzare

Hi.

Greetings No Comments

Hey. This is the very plain blog of (DJ) Tara. Soon, it will be a site with information on where you can catch me spin around New York City, some mixes, and just random thoughts on music, life,  and whatever else is on my mind.

However, for now, it will be a blog, where I hope to post up some items and make sure things are working alright while I get the visual stimulating parts of this site up and running.

As far as who I am, if you happened to have come across this site from my business card or a party flyer or somewhere else, here’s my bio-in-progress:

DJ Tara is a native New Yorker and lifetime music lover who grew up listening to Hip Hop, Soul, Reggae, Dance Music, and Rock. After a few years of being a fresh faced career girl, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a DJ and sharing her knowledge and love of music with others. She still remembers her first public gig: November 5th, 2004 at Sin Sin/ Leopard Lounge in the East Village. Since then, she has been moonlighting as a DJ at various venues throughout New York City. She currently lives in Brooklyn.

That was pretty awful but you’re not here to grade my bio. You’re here to hear some music, maybe have a laugh, possibly learn some things, and find out where you can check me around town, which I hope will be pretty regularly soon.

So, welcome, and please stay tuned.

(DJ) Tara
